Google Ads automated promotions: how to turn them off
By SpendCanary team · Updated
Since October 12, 2026, Google Ads can find offers on your website, such as “buy one, get one free”, and show them as promotions in your ads without asking you first. It applies to Search and Performance Max campaigns that have location assets (your business address) attached, and it stays on unless you switch it off.
What changed
Google emailed advertisers that from October 12, 2026 it would “automatically identify and extract high-quality promotions” from their websites and add them to campaigns, with no setup needed. Google calls these automated promotions. They are one of the account-level automated assets: extras Google creates for your ads from your own website.
According to Google’s help page:
- They show only in active Search and Performance Max campaigns with location assets attached, including Local campaigns.
- Google skips any campaign that already runs a promotion you added yourself.
- Each automated promotion runs for less than 24 hours, and Google can switch it on again if the offer is still on your site.
- Google uses only offers that are still active, and they must follow its normal ad policies.
Why it matters for a small business
Promotions you add yourself say exactly what you want, with the dates you choose. An automated one is Google’s reading of your website. If a page still shows last month’s discount, a promotion that only applies to one location, or wording you’d never put in an ad, Google may still use it. You might only find out when a customer asks for the deal.
How to check whether Google added any
- In Google Ads, click Campaigns, then Assets.
- In the filter bar, set Asset type to Promotion.
- Look at the Added by column. Promotions Google created say Google AI. Hover over it to see where Google found the offer.
(If you can’t find it, search for “assets” in the Google Ads search bar.)
How to turn automated promotions off
- Click Campaigns, then Assets.
- In the filter bar, click the three-dot More icon and choose Account level automated assets.
- On that page, click the three-dot menu and choose Advanced settings.
- Find Automated promotions, set it to Off, and give a reason if Google asks.
- Click Save.
(If you can’t find it, search for “automated assets” in the Google Ads search bar.)
While you’re on that page, look at the other automated assets in the same list, such as dynamic sitelinks and dynamic images. Several may already be on in your account. Keep the ones you’re happy with, and turn off the rest. Our guide to automatically created assets explains each one.
When to leave it on
Automated promotions can help if you run frequent, simple offers that are always up to date on your website, and you don’t have time to add promotions by hand. If you leave them on:
- keep offers on your site current, and remove expired ones;
- check the Assets report now and then for promotions marked Google AI;
- add your most important offers yourself, so you control the wording and dates. Google skips campaigns that already have your own promotions.
Check it automatically
The free SpendCanary scan flags account-level assets Google created and showed in your ads in the last 30 days, including automated promotions, with how often each kind was shown. It also flags automatically created assets inside your campaigns, and settings Google switched on through auto-applied recommendations. See also how to turn off auto-apply recommendations.
Common questions
- Did I agree to automated promotions?
- Not directly. Google told advertisers by email that from October 12, 2026 it would find promotions on their websites and add them to campaigns without manual setup. It's part of account-level automated assets, which many accounts have switched on by default.
- Which campaigns can show automated promotions?
- Search and Performance Max campaigns that have location assets attached. Google skips campaigns that already run promotions you added yourself.
- Can an automated promotion show an old offer?
- Google says it only uses active offers it can still see on your website, and each one runs for less than 24 hours before it's checked again. If an old offer is still on a page, it can still be picked up, so keep your site's offers up to date.
- Will turning them off hurt my ads?
- It stops Google from creating promotions for you; nothing else changes. You can still add promotions yourself, with the exact wording and start and end dates you choose.
