ChatGPT ads cost: minimum budget, bids and billing
By the SpendCanary team · Updated
At a glance
ChatGPT ads cost at least $25 a day per campaign in the US, and OpenAI suggests a starting bid of $3 to $5 per click (both as of November 2026). What you actually pay per click is set by an auction, and the daily budget is an average over the week, so a single day can cost more than $25.
These prices change often. Every figure on this page carries the date we checked it.
What is the minimum budget for ChatGPT ads?
$25 a day per campaign for US dollar accounts, according to OpenAI’s help, and lower minimums in some other currencies. There’s no large upfront commitment any more: when ChatGPT ads launched in February 2026 only big advertisers could buy them, and self-serve buying with no minimum commitment opened to US businesses on 5 May 2026.
How much does a click on ChatGPT ads cost?
There’s no fixed price. You choose to pay per thousand views (CPM), per click (CPC), or let OpenAI optimise for conversions, which still bills per click. You’re never charged per conversion.
OpenAI suggests starting with a maximum of $3 to $5 per click and says it doesn’t yet have performance benchmarks to share. OpenAI also offers automatic bidding, which sets bids for you. A fixed maximum bid is the surest ceiling on what one click can cost, and OpenAI is changing its bidding options, so check what Ads Manager offers when you set up.
Can ChatGPT ads spend more than my daily budget?
Yes. OpenAI treats the daily budget as an average over seven days. Its help says one day can spend up to twice the daily budget, and seven days up to seven times it.
That’s similar to Google Ads, which can also spend up to twice the daily budget on one day, but Google averages over the month (see why Google Ads spent more than your daily budget). The shorter window has a side effect: a campaign that spends heavily on a few days can go quiet for the rest of the seven days while still showing as active.
How do you pay for ChatGPT ads?
After you advertise, not before. Your card is charged when unpaid spend reaches a payment threshold, and again at the end of the month. If a payment fails, ads stop. The payment threshold decides when you’re charged; it isn’t a spending cap, so campaign budgets are your main control.
What does $25 a day buy on ChatGPT ads?
Say you set the US minimum of $25 a day on one campaign. One day can bill up to $50 and seven days up to $175, so four weeks come to at most $700. If clicks cost $3 to $5 (OpenAI’s suggested maximum bid; the auction sets the real price), $175 a week buys about 35 to 58 clicks.
If 1 in 20 clicks becomes an enquiry (use your own rate from Google Ads, not ours), that’s 2 or 3 enquiries a week at $60 to $100 each. Before comparing that with Google Search, check what’s being counted: OpenAI’s conversion totals include people who saw an ad and converted within a day without clicking. Google Search reports click-based conversions by default, so a fair comparison counts clicks on both sides.
Should a small business try ChatGPT ads or stay on Google Ads?
Try them if your Google Ads conversion tracking works and you know your cost per lead, and you can spend about $700 over four weeks without taking it from a campaign that already brings leads. People asking ChatGPT to compare options like yours is a good sign, but that’s our judgment, not OpenAI’s.
Stay with Google Ads first if a Search campaign that brings leads at a good cost is limited by budget: the next dollar belongs there. Also wait if you can’t track conversions on both platforms. OpenAI doesn’t show ads next to conversations about health or politics, so those businesses may get little reach.
If you do test, keep it small and measured:
- Check that your billing country can buy self-serve.
- Install OpenAI’s tracking pixel, or its Shopify app, and record a test conversion before launch.
- Decide on creative enhancements. From 30 October 2026 they’re on by default and can rewrite headlines and descriptions, translate text and change the landing page. You can turn them off under Manage settings in Ads Manager, for the account and per campaign.
- Start with one campaign paying per click, $25 a day, and one ad group pointing to a specific page, not your home page.
- Set an end date four weeks out, then compare click-based cost per lead with your Google Search campaigns. Spend can show up in reports later than clicks, and conversions take at least a day.

Common questions
- Who sees ads in ChatGPT?
- People on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu are ad-free, and OpenAI says it doesn’t show ads to people it believes are under 18.
- Can I choose keywords for ChatGPT ads?
- No. Ads are matched to the conversation, the ad and its landing page. You can add "context hints" to guide the matching, but OpenAI says they aren’t exact-match keywords.
- Which countries can buy ChatGPT ads?
- ChatGPT ads are sold in 89 countries since 21 October 2026. Whether you can buy them yourself depends on the country of the business that pays.
