Google Ads invalid clicks: how credits and refunds work

By SpendCanary team · Updated

Google doesn’t charge you for invalid clicks it catches before billing, and it credits you for ones it finds later. If you think it missed some, you can ask Google to investigate clicks from the last 60 days.

What counts as an invalid click

Google calls traffic invalid when it “doesn’t represent genuine interest in your business.” Its examples include:

  • Bots: software that clicks ads automatically.
  • Accidental clicks: for example, an ad placed too close to a button on an app.
  • Fraudulent placements: sites that hide or stack ads so people click them without knowing.
  • Deliberate clicks: such as a competitor clicking your ads to use up your budget.

How Google handles them

Google says it uses automated filters, machine learning and manual reviews, often catching invalid traffic as it happens.

  • Caught before your bill closes: removed from your billing and your reports. You never pay for it.
  • Found after you were billed: Google gives you a credit, when appropriate. It shows as an “Invalid activity” adjustment on your bill.

Your campaign numbers don’t change when a credit arrives. That’s why Google has a separate report for credits, below.

How to see invalid clicks you weren’t charged for

  1. Go to Campaigns.
  2. Select the Columns icon above the table.
  3. Search for Invalid clicks and tick it.
  4. Select Apply.

(If you can’t find it, search for “invalid clicks” in the Google Ads search bar.)

This column counts clicks Google filtered out before billing. A number here is not a problem. It means the filters worked.

How to see the credits you already got

On your bill

  1. Select the Billing icon in the left menu.
  2. Select Summary.
  3. Open the month you want to check.
  4. Look for adjustments labeled Invalid activity (or Invalid clicks).

Credits for clicks near the end of a month can show up the next month.

In the Invalid Activity Credit Report

  1. Go to Campaigns and open Report editor.
  2. Under the template gallery, select Invalid Activity Credit Report: Search & PMax.
  3. Read the credited clicks, credited interactions and credited amount columns.

(If you can’t find it, search for “report editor” in the Google Ads search bar.)

Google says this report breaks credits down by campaign and network, and shows your cost and cost per conversion with the credited clicks taken out. It only covers Search and Performance Max campaigns.

How to ask for an investigation

If you think Google missed invalid clicks, you can ask it to look. Google’s help page on invalid traffic links to the Click Quality Form.

  1. Pick the dates. Google only accepts activity from the last 60 days.
  2. Gather the details listed in the next section.
  3. Open Google’s invalid traffic help page and follow its link to the Click Quality Form.
  4. Fill it in and submit it.
  5. Wait for an email. Google says a review typically takes several business days, because specialists check the data by hand.

If Google agrees some clicks were invalid, the credit shows up as an Invalid activity adjustment on a later bill.

What evidence helps

Google asks for:

  • Your 10-digit Google Ads customer ID.
  • The exact date range.
  • The campaign and ad group names, and any suspicious keywords.
  • Your website’s server logs for those dates, with IP addresses, device details and GCLIDs. A GCLID is a click ID that Google passes in the web address with each ad click.
  • For fake leads, a spreadsheet of GCLIDs and what you found about each lead.
  • A short note on why the traffic looks wrong.

If you don’t have server logs, ask your web host or web person before the 60 days run out. Many hosts keep logs for a limited time.

What not to expect

Google is clear about what an investigation won’t do:

  • It won’t tell you whether specific clicks were judged valid or invalid.
  • It won’t compare its results click by click with an outside click-fraud tool, or explain how its detection works.
  • It won’t give you an “industry normal” invalid click rate. Google says there isn’t one.
  • It can’t protect you from fake form fills on your site. Its filters stop at the ad.

A spike in traffic alone isn’t proof of fraud. Busy seasons, news, a budget change or a looser keyword setting can all raise clicks. Check why spend suddenly jumps first.

What you can do yourself

  1. Block IP addresses. If you see repeat clicks from one address, add it under the campaign’s Settings, then Additional settings, then IP exclusions. Google allows up to 500 per campaign. Performance Max uses the account-level list under Admin, then Account settings.
  2. Tighten your area. Paying for clicks from outside your service area can look like fraud, but often it’s just a setting. See Presence or interest.
  3. Review search partners. Partner sites behave differently from Google Search. See whether to turn off search partners.

Check it automatically

The free SpendCanary scan doesn’t judge single clicks. It does flag related leaks: clicks from outside the places you target, and search partners or Display costing money with no conversions.
