PMax spending on YouTube: how to see it and limit it
By SpendCanary team · Updated
Performance Max shows you its YouTube spend in the Channel performance report, for any date range after June 6, 2025. You can’t switch YouTube off with one setting, because Google groups YouTube with Search, Maps, Gmail and Discover as “Google channels.” What you can do is measure it, block the YouTube channels and videos you don’t want, and move money toward what works.
What Performance Max does with your budget
Performance Max is a campaign type where Google decides where your ads show. One campaign can run on Google Search, YouTube, the Display Network (websites and apps that show Google ads), Discover, Gmail, Maps and search partners (other sites that show Google search ads).
You give it a budget, a goal, and some text, images and video. Google picks the channels. That’s handy, but it also means you may not know where your money goes.
Why the channel mix matters
For many small businesses, people searching on Google are the most ready to buy. People watching a video weren’t looking for you. YouTube can still bring results. But if it costs much more per conversion (a sale, call or form you count as a result), it pulls your average up.
Be fair to the campaign, though. Performance Max aims for the best result across the whole campaign. A video view today may lead to a search next week. Some conversions also arrive days after the click, so a channel can look worse than it is for a while. Use the channel numbers as a guide, not a final verdict.
How to see what PMax spends on YouTube
- Go to Campaigns and click your Performance Max campaign.
- Open Insights and reports.
- Select Channel performance.
(If you can’t find it, search for “channel performance” in the Google Ads search bar.)
The page has a summary, charts, and a table at the bottom. The table is the most useful part. It lists each channel (Google Search, search partners, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps) with impressions, clicks, conversions and cost.
How to read it
- Pick a date range of at least 30 days.
- For each channel, divide cost by conversions to get cost per conversion.
- Compare YouTube, and every other channel, with Google Search.
- Look at the share of cost, not just cost per conversion. A costly channel with tiny spend matters less.
- Check the Status column. It can show that a channel is not eligible, limited, or missing required assets. Hover over it for detail.
A worked example: Performance Max spent $600 last month. YouTube took $240 and brought 2 conversions, or $120 each. Search took $300 and brought 10, or $30 each. YouTube is 40% of the cost at four times the cost per conversion. That’s worth acting on.
Google notes that a channel with no spend isn’t always a problem. It may just mean Google expects better results elsewhere right now. After big changes to budget, bids or assets, Google suggests allowing one to two weeks for the campaign to settle.
How to rein in YouTube spend
There’s no YouTube off switch, but you have levers.
1. Exclude YouTube channels and videos you don’t want. Performance Max uses your account-level placement exclusions.
- Go to Tools, then Content suitability.
- Open Advanced settings and find Excluded placements.
- Add the YouTube channels or videos, then click Save.
(If you can’t find it, search for “excluded placements” in the Google Ads search bar.)
Google doesn’t let you add youtube.com itself, or other Google-owned sites, as an exclusion. See how to exclude placements in Performance Max for finding which videos showed your ads.
2. Tighten content suitability. On the same Content suitability page, the inventory type setting for YouTube, Display and video partners has three levels: Maximum (the default), Moderate and Limited. It’s about the kind of content your ads appear next to, not about spend, but stricter settings can trim some placements.
3. Upload your own video. Google says that if you don’t upload a video, it may make one from your other assets. So leaving out video doesn’t keep you off YouTube. Your own video at least means you control what people see.
4. Move budget to a Search campaign. If Search clearly brings your results, a separate Search campaign gives you more control over keywords and networks. Google says a Search campaign keyword that exactly matches the search (or its spelling-corrected form) is preferred over Performance Max.
5. Use channel prioritization for the rest. In October 2026, Google began rolling out Channel prioritization. In Performance Max, YouTube sits inside “Google channels,” so you can’t lower it on its own. You can set search partners and the Display Network to Low priority and cap their share of the daily budget. Google says a 0% allocation means it won’t spend there. It’s rolling out slowly, so you may not have it yet.
When to leave it alone
If YouTube converts at a cost you accept, keep going. If your conversion tracking is weak or new, fix that first. The channel numbers are only as good as the conversions behind them. Our conversion tracking checklist can help.

The free SpendCanary scan reads each Performance Max campaign’s cost and conversions by channel and compares them with Search. SpendCanary flags this when more than half of a Performance Max campaign’s cost outside Search costs at least twice as much per conversion as Search.
Common questions
- Can I turn off YouTube in Performance Max?
- Not with a single setting. Google groups YouTube with Search, Maps, Gmail and Discover as Google channels, so channel prioritization can't single it out. You can exclude YouTube channels and videos you don't want, or move budget to a Search campaign.
- Where do I see how much Performance Max spends on YouTube?
- Open the campaign, go to Insights and reports, and choose Channel performance. The table lists cost, clicks and conversions for YouTube, Search, Display, Discover, Gmail, Maps and search partners.
- If I don't upload a video, will Performance Max stay off YouTube?
- No. Google says that if you don't upload a video, it may make one from your other assets. Uploading your own video at least means you control what people see.
- How long should I wait before judging a channel?
- Use at least 30 days of data. After big changes to budget, bids or assets, Google suggests allowing one to two weeks for the campaign to settle.
