Google Ads for garage door companies: verification and waste

By the SpendCanary team · Updated

At a glance

  • In the US, garage door services need Google’s advanced verification before their ads can run. (source)
  • Local Services Ads don’t offer pre-badge ads for garage door services. (source)
  • Negative keywords don’t match close variants, so "manual" doesn’t block "manuals". (source)

Google Ads for garage door companies in the US starts with advanced verification: your ads can’t run until you pass it, though Canada and other countries don’t require it. After that, most waste comes from DIY and parts searches, and blocking them has one trap: the opener brand names in those searches also appear in your best repair searches.

Do garage door companies need advanced verification?

In the US, yes. Google lists garage door services and locksmiths as the two categories that need advanced verification there, and it covers both Google Ads and Local Services Ads. The check reviews your Google Ads account and public records such as state registrations and licences, and includes a recorded video interview. Our locksmith guide explains the steps in more detail.

Outside the US, garage door companies don’t need it. Canada requires advanced verification for locksmiths but not for garage door services.

In Local Services Ads, garage door services is an eligible category, but pre-badge ads aren’t available for it. Your ads start showing once you have the badge.

Why shouldn’t you block brand names like LiftMaster?

Because the same brand appears in searches you want and searches you don’t. “liftmaster manual” and “chamberlain remote programming” are people fixing it themselves. “liftmaster repair near me” is someone who wants you.

Say your search terms report for a month shows $96 on “liftmaster manual”, “chamberlain how to program remote” and “genie opener manuals”, and $640 on searches like “liftmaster repair near me”. Adding liftmaster, chamberlain and genie as negatives saves the $96 and throws away the $640 of searches that bring jobs. Adding manual, manuals and "how to" removes all $96 and keeps the rest.

Note the two spellings. Negative keywords don’t match close variants, so manual on its own doesn’t block “manuals”.

What does a click cost a garage door company?

No public benchmark we could check gives garage doors their own figure. The nearest is WordStream’s 2026 Home & Home Improvement category: about $8.33 a click and $90.92 a lead for US search campaigns, April 2025 to March 2026.

At that price, watch how much Google can spend in a day. It can spend up to twice your average daily budget on a busy day, though you won’t be charged more than 30.4 times the daily budget in a month. A $60 daily budget can spend $120 on a Monday after a cold snap, and up to $1,824 in the month. See spending more than your daily budget and what to do after a spend spike.

Which settings waste a garage door company’s money?

  • Location. You drive to the customer’s house, so target people in or regularly in your service area; see presence or interest.
  • Search partners and Display. Search campaigns can also show on partner sites and the Display Network. Check what each costs and brings in; see search partners and Display in a Search campaign.
  • Calls. A broken spring is a phone call. Count calls as conversions with a minimum length that matches a real enquiry; see call tracking.

Which negative keywords should a garage door company add?

These are for garage door searches only; add the everyday ones (jobs, salary, DIY, “how to”) from the negative keyword list builder too. Quoted words are phrase match, the rest broad.

Check these before adding them: parts, used, myq, commercial and paint. Leave them out if you sell parts, install smart openers, work on commercial doors or paint doors. And never block the opener brands your customers search for.

Common questions

Can a garage door company run Local Services Ads?
Yes, garage door services is an eligible category. Pre-badge ads aren’t available for it, so your ads start showing once you have the badge.
Should I bid on garage door opener brand names?
Searches like "liftmaster repair" are often good jobs, so don’t block brand names. Google doesn’t restrict trademarks used as keywords. In ad text it can restrict them, for example when they’re used in a confusing or misleading way.
