Google Ads for locksmiths: verification, costs and waste
By the SpendCanary team · Updated
At a glance
Google Ads for locksmiths in the US and Canada starts with Google’s advanced verification, and in Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden and Belgium locksmith ads can’t run at all. Once you’re verified, three things decide most of your results: where your ads show, how you count calls, and which searches you block.
Do locksmiths need advanced verification for Google Ads?
Yes, in the US and Canada. Google restricts locksmith ads there, and you must apply for advanced verification before your ads can run. The same policy covers Google Ads and Local Services Ads.
The check has three parts:
- Google reviews your Google Ads account.
- It checks public records such as state registrations and professional licences.
- It holds a video interview with you, and you agree to have it recorded.
In Google Ads, lead generators and directories that advertise locksmith services have two extra rules. They must show the typical price range for all advertised services in the top 20% of the homepage and landing pages, not in a pop-up that can be closed, in text at least as large as most of the page. And the business’s legal address must be on the website, for example in the footer or on the contact page.
Apply before you spend time on campaigns: until you pass, your locksmith ads can’t run in these two countries.
Where can’t locksmiths advertise?
Locksmith ads can’t run in Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden or Belgium. In the US and Canada they can, after verification. Everywhere else, Google says ads for local services can run.
What does a click cost a locksmith?
No public benchmark we could check gives a locksmith figure on its own. The nearest is WordStream’s 2026 Home & Home Improvement category: about $8.33 a click and $90.92 a lead for US search campaigns, April 2025 to March 2026. That makes each wasted call expensive, but the bigger risk for a locksmith is blocking the wrong searches.
Say car lockouts are a fifth of your calls, and your search terms show $20 a month on “car key programming machine”. Adding car as a negative removes the $20 and a fifth of your jobs with it. Adding machine removes the $20 and keeps the lockouts. Block the word that makes the search wrong, not the word that names your service.
Which settings waste a locksmith’s money?
- Location. Lockouts are local and urgent. Target people in or regularly in your area, not people who’ve only shown interest in it; see presence or interest.
- Call length. A lockout call can be short: “I’m locked out, how soon can you get here?” If your minimum call length is 60 seconds, some real jobs won’t count as conversions and Google’s bidding learns the wrong lesson. Check your call details and set the length to match; see call tracking.
- Match types. A phrase keyword like “emergency locksmith” also matches “emergency locksmith training”. It’s often worth keeping with a couple of negatives; see phrase vs exact match.
- Hours. If you advertise 24-hour service, answer 24 hours. A missed call at 3am is still a paid click; see ad schedule.
The free SpendCanary scan checks your location setting, search partners and the search terms you paid for, without changing anything.
Which negative keywords should a locksmith add?
Generic blocks like jobs, salary, DIY and training are in the negative keyword list builder. The locksmith ones are below; quoted words are phrase match.
"locksmith license"
apprentice
"lock pick"
lockpicking
locksport
"bump key"
"slim jim"
"key blank"
"key machine"
"locksmith tools"
"locksmith supply"
keyme
"minute key"
"home depot"
walmart
"rekey kit"
instructions
"locksmith franchise"
"locksmith software"
"locksmith insurance"
Check these before adding them: battery, safe and padlock. Many locksmiths replace key fob batteries, open safes or sell padlocks. And never add car if you do car lockouts.

Common questions
- How short can a locksmith’s call be and still count?
- As short as the minimum call length you set. Lockout calls are often brief, so check your call details and set the length to match the calls that became jobs.
- Do locksmiths need verification for Local Services Ads too?
- Yes. The advanced verification policy covers Google Ads and Local Services Ads. Local Services Ads also don’t offer pre-badge ads for locksmiths, so you wait for the badge before your ads show.
- Can a lead generation company advertise locksmith services?
- Yes, with extra rules. It must show the typical price range for its services near the top of its homepage and landing pages, and show the business’s legal address on its website.
